Why, For an Insured Traveller, the Nearest Hospital May Be the Wrong Hospital.

The importance of Destination Healthcare Intelligence

When a traveller becomes unwell or injured—especially during an emergency in a developing country—the nearest hospital may be the only option available for initial resuscitation and life-saving measures.

At other times, the nearest hospital might lack the resources (such as doctors, specialists, equipment, pathology, radiology, surgical capability, and intensive care support) required to treat the traveller’s medical issue appropriately.

Before directing a traveller to a hospital, a medical assistance team should as a minimum consider:
• Can the hospital manage the suspected condition as per current guidance?
• What happens if the patient deteriorates?
• Can the patient be transferred safely to a better-equipped hospital?

The answers can vary greatly between countries, cities and even hospitals located only a few kilometres apart.

The wrong initial choice can lead to treatment delays, inadequate evaluations, investigations and treatments or a second transfer later in the case. It can also increase costs without providing appropriate care.

For travel insurers, provider selection is therefore much more than finding the closest hospital on a map. It requires a practical understanding of what each facility can actually provide.

At Frontierer, we use our medical expertise and hospital and healthcare system knowledge across Asia and the Pacific to help identify the most suitable option for each patient.

We analysts gather destination healthcare intelligence is everyday.
Because we know that the nearest hospital is not always the right hospital.
